Aristocratic, Extremely Versatile Evergreen Shrubs
Japanese Plum Yew - or Cephalotaxus, is an amazingly versatile evergreen conifer that will grow in full sun to full shade or any condition of sun and shade in between. The mature leaves are generally dark green in color. As the new growth emerges, the new leaves are colored a vibrant light green, offering an appealing contrast. The leaves are medium texture and resemble that of a woody fern. Cephalotaxus are of slow to moderate growth rate, and have low maintenance requirements. Cephalotaxus plants are very adaptable and will grow from Florida, north to New England states, and southwest to Texas. Cephalotaxus plants report good resistance to deer browsing.
Drought tolerant once established in the landscape, Cephalotaxus is a handsome, aristocratic, extremely versatile, evergreen shrub.
Nelson Nursery was introduced to this group of plants by the late Mr. Cecil Hill, a landscape architect and visionary plantsman from Homer, Georgia, and have been growing it for almost forty years now. Mr. Hill listed two forms in his sales catalog: a long needle form and a short needle form. These two were later accurately described as Cephalotaxus ‘drupacea’ and Cephalotaxus ‘prostrata’.
We offer four distinct cultivars for you to choose from for your landscape. If Cephalotaxus sounds like the ideal landscape plant for you, we share the same thoughts.
