Prunus laurocerasus ‘Zabeliana’
‘Zabel’ laurel grows wider than ‘Otto Luyken’ and has medium to dark green willow shaped leaves. As a young plant, it grows wider than tall, but matures to almost equal dimensions. It is reportedly the most cold hardy of the laurels, having originated in Eastern Europe.
Zabel laurel is a landscape favorite of mine, easily grown, not demanding, tolerant of conditions with the exception that it does not tolerate wet sites. I am as comfortable with it as an old pair of shoes or a favorite shirt – it has proven itself over time.
