From the beginning, Bill and Nadine made continuing education a priority in their young business venture. They would visit both public and private gardens studying garden design and implementation. Early on they joined professional associations such as the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen and the American Rhododendron Society and attended yearly “short courses” which were continuing educational sessions sponsored by the North Carolina Cooperative Agricultural Extension Service and North Carolina State University. At these educational sessions they expanded their knowledge learning from industry experts nationwide. Bill and Nadine traveled extensively with annual summer road trips with members of the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen and visited the best nurseries, garden centers, gardens and estates across these United States of America, and ventured as far as Great Britain, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.
The ideas gleaned from these travels were brought back to the Mooresville/ Lake Norman area and adapted for use here. This was an era of rapid experimentation in the nursery industry with such innovations as moving from growing plants in the field to learning how to grow plants in containers and Nelson Nursery was part of this innovation. With experimentation comes valuable lessons learned, some from successes and some from failure. Those lessons learned from the school of hard knocks remain with me to this day.
Throughout this time, Nelson Nursery has had a long history of introducing and growing new and different plants selections and making them available to our friends and clients. From the beginning, Nadine Nelson was and instrumental part in the founding and daily operations of Nelson Nursery. She was one of the first women to be involved in the nursery industry at a point in time when females were a rarity in the business. Nadine’s passion is still very evident today, as she still periodically helps out around the nursery.

Brian Nelson manages the day to day operations for Nelson Nursery. Brian is someone who has practical knowledge from growing up around plants and the nursery. Brian graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in ornamental horticulture with an emphasis in landscape design. After all of these years, “I still enjoy landscape design and the transformation and implementation of garden spaces.” We have implemented everything from individual custom mixed container creations, custom residential landscapes, to small scale commercial projects, many of which are award winners.
Landscaping remains a vital component of our business. Brian’s years of experience and knowledge are a valuable asset, when it comes to advising customers about specialty plants or potential landscaping options. Another valuable asset to the Nelson Nursery team is Chris Anderson.
